Apo Kayan – Indonesia – A Dutch friend came across this image while travelling. A Forest Guardian perhaps He appears above doors and in temples as well as on babies’ carrying baskets. Perhaps to ward off evil demons and protect the child?
Ranakpur – Rajasthan – India. On a spectacular marble column this head appears spewing branches and leaves, birds peck the fruit from the branches very much like the Sutton benger head.
Sutton Benger – Wiltshire – UK – in a tiny church one of the great works of western art. Said to be mediaeval though there is some thought that the head was re-worked in Victorian times. In any case the pedestal is far too big for the tiny one-roomed chapel where it now can be found and surely came from somewhere else? Or was there a wealthy patron? The moulding at the top suggests a later re-working but could possibly be original.
May King and Queen – Notre Dame de Paris – In the side chapel beyond the treasury these heads look down from opposite sides of the church perhaps above the seats of the King and Queen of France? Said to be later replacements for heads destroyed by fire and to have been designed by Violet le Duc. The heads appearing from a bower of leaves are a hint at Jack in the Green and the Maid Marion/Robin Hood legends.
