| Mike was President of the Ramblers
Association for three years after which, as is the custom, he was asked
to be a life Vice President. Other Vice Presidents include Janet Street Porter, Lord Peter Melchett and Fay Godwin. Mike's three years as President were just another example of his commitment to the outdoor movement (in particular access and conservation matters) and to Green matters in general. A fervent campaigner on all kinds of green matters Mike has made films for Channel 4's Ecology Series What On Earth Is Going working in Derbyshire on such things as quarrying in the Peak National Park and in the Himalayas on pollution and erosion caused by mass tourism in the Annapurna and Everest regions. For his work on the later film he was elected a fellow Of The Royal Geographical Society. For years he has been a keen supporter of Greenpeace, Friends of The Earth, Men of the Woods Friends of the Irish Environment and The Yorkshire Dales Society. He lead a failed attempt to force the Yorkshire Dales National Park to reconsider the granting of planning permission for a golf course in the Yorkshire Dales and has campaigned strongly against some of the terrible developments that have taken place in Ireland such as the Interpretative Centre at Dunquin on the lovely Dingle Peninsula and the proposed similar development at Mullghmor in the heart of the Burren in County Clare. |
