Today our newspapers are filled with stories of UFOs, extra-terrestial abduction, serial killers and disasters. The medieval mind found its horrors not in newspapers or the cinema but in the picture walls of the great cathedrals, the doom windows that showed devils dragging the lost down into the maw of hell, the creatures of the night that were carved into the stone of the bosses and the capitals and the hidden wooden world of the misericords.
