A Little Book Of GARGOYLES
The
monsters that grin and leer down at us from the roofs and towers of medieval
churches are nightmares in the sky that have stood for centuries warding
off the evil that lies beyond the holy ground.
They reached their finest flowering in the Middle Ages yet their story goes
far beyond that time to the very beginnings of art when men painted and
carved demons to keep away demons and turned their fears outwards into the
dark to frighten away fear itself Monsters, dragons, devils, imps, skeletons,
anything grotesque and weird was carved and painted, serving to remind us
not simply that death is the final purpose of life but that along the dusty
way to death lie bugaboos and boggarts and things that go bump in the night.
